Pain-Free Walking
Thank you for all the good wishes for my long-awaited Dr appointment. I am so excited to share the results. Thankfully, my self-diagnosis was incorrect. I had an initial X-ray done in June that showed that I had two broken screws in my ankle. The screws had been there since 2011, when I broke my ankle. I thought that the broken screws were causing the constant pain in my ankle. I found out after more X-rays and a visit with an ankle specialist that the pain is not from the broken screws. The Dr went on to explain that he believed the screws had probably been broken for years. He assured me that this was not uncommon and that my ankle had healed very well and was straight. He said the Dr who operated on my ankle did a good job. He pointed to the x-ray and showed me where the pain was coming from. He explained that the bone-on-bone friction was the culprit. This is also common from a broken ankle that involves a dislocation. We discussed the options, and he suggested cortisone, which he said he could administer immediately. I was so afraid that I would need surgery, so the thought of something as simple as a cortisone shot was easy to agree to. The Dr said it could take a couple of days to take effect. Lorraine (my sister, best friend, and publisher) went with me to my appointment, and we celebrated the good news with lunch in our favorite Lebanese restaurant. It was delicious. I got up this morning pain-free. I stood up and took the first pain-free steps. I cannot believe how the simple cortisone shot has made such an improvement. I am delighted and celebrated today by buying a new pair of shoes for walking and working on my next ship. I am so happy. I look forward to getting a call from the Union Hall and getting a ship to finish out the season. I am optimistic that the call will come soon. I will start to organize my seabags so I am ready. Keep your virtual seabags close too. I will keep you posted.
